If you have started looking for a couples therapist, you have probably seen these two names everywhere. Here is what they are, how they differ, and why I use both.
The Gottman Method gives couples practical, research-based tools for conflict, friendship, and connection. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps couples understand the emotions and needs underneath their fights.
One is more about what you do. The other is more about what you feel and need. Used together, they help couples change both the pattern and the bond underneath it.
The Gottman Method
The Gottman Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman from decades of research observing thousands of couples. It focuses on three things: building friendship, managing conflict, and creating shared meaning.
Some of its best-known ideas include the Four Horsemen (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling) and their antidotes, starting hard conversations gently, making repair attempts, and turning toward each other's small bids for connection. I am trained in the Gottman Method and lead the Seven Principles workshop for couples. Learn about Gottman Method couples therapy.
Emotionally Focused Therapy
Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and is grounded in attachment science. It sees relationship distress as a bond that feels threatened. When partners feel disconnected, they get caught in negative cycles, like one pushing and the other pulling away.
EFT helps each partner understand and share the feelings underneath their reactions, so they can respond to each other differently. Studies of EFT have found that around 70 to 75 percent of couples move from distress to recovery.

Why I use both
Many couples come in already knowing good communication skills. They just cannot use them when it matters, because when emotions run high, tools go out the window.
EFT helps us slow down and get to what is really driving the reaction. Gottman tools give you something concrete to practice between sessions. Together, you get a clear plan and real change underneath it.
What this means for you
You do not need to choose a method or know anything about either one before we start. In your first session, I learn your dynamic and shape the work around the two of you. Here is what to expect in your first session.
